I need to set up two forums that the threads in them can be viewed only by the thread starter and admins/mods only. Users should be able to view their own threads but not anyone elses.

I've been through the permissions a few times and just can't figure out which one I need to change if it is indeed possible.

That should be done by a modification or a plugin.
Try to search for a modification that does it here: http://mods.mybboard.net
If you don't find any, you can ask for that one in the requests forum.

This is being considered for 1.6 I believe.
