Did you enter mysqli as your database type? You may need to contact your host. It's not likely you were hacked.
Go into your inc/config.php and check to see if database type is mysqli and if it is then remove the i and make it just mysql. Try that.
I also had this problem, however it is now fixed due to changing mysqli to mysql, no idea why i had to do this

Yes, they probably just changed their MySQL version but didn't think to tell you.
They might have rebuilt their php and forgot to add mysqli extension...contact them about it. Some hosts just suck at updating their software.
