If it was 1.4 you can do what you want with the copyright as it's open source. You just won't get support if it's not on the footer. And how does the copyright ruin your designs?

1.2 isn't supported anymore anyways, and you only lose support for removing c/r (and you can't showcase ur forum). THEREFORE: if you're not updating to 1.4 anytime soon, go for it.

You cannot remove the copyright in 1.2. 1.4.2+ are under the GPL license, else, they're under the EULA which prohibits copyright removal.
The copyright indeed has to stay on
