whether the configuration and settings file should be writeable??

It kind of has to be writable for your mybb forum to be set up First off it won't let you set it up at the beginning when it makes sure you chmod the files secondly how will the configuration of the forums be set up if it's not writable im just thinking i may be wrong but torrent spy gave you a good link to check

You can CHMOD config.php to 444 after you install, settings.php has to be 666 otherwise it won't work.
