Is there a way to set permissions so only a certain user group can download certain files and see certain categories?

Not with the current version. It was going to be in 2.0, but I never got around to finishing it and although the person I sent it off to said they would finish it on the 20th of June I never heard from him. I have no idea how much was done by him, so I'm considering just putting up what I do have as an open source community project. So far all it really needs is the Admin CP module for managing it.
