I managed to protect a directory on my website with .htaccess, but if the user knows the URL to the file they can still access it. How can I prevent this?

You should be able to .htaccess protect an entire directory and all it's contents, i can't remember what you put in it exactly but if you run cPanel you should be able to do it from your hosting CP.

Edit: Found a solution. Just put the directory in my home directory, so you can't access it by HTTP.
