Avatars and uploads should have both base directories and base URLs. Currently they only ask for a directory and use this as a URL prefix! The problem arises because the URL does not always correspond to the URL. For example, the directory /home/my_user/public_html/ is accessed through the web as /~my_user/.

You shouldn't need to specify an absolute path for the uploads and avatars. Leaving them as ./uploads and ./uploads/avatars should work fine.
