I know how to make glowing text in gimp, only problem is, it makes for a LOT of layers, well the button I am wanting to create has gloss and an overshadow over it, so would I have to duplicate the image AND blur it with the text?

Duplicate just the text before you add any shadow over wise you'll end up with a black blur background.
