1) duplicating the main theme+template, only changing 2 image URLs in the 'headerinclude' template and the background colour in the global.css.
2) applying the 'new' theme to these subforums, which will automatically utilise the new template set.
it's a bit silly, because whenever i must change a template in the main template set, i must also make this change in the subforum template set :ß

it would be nice, if mybb would support "subsidiarity" in themes+templates, then you could just create 1 different subtemplate and let it replace the one in the 'upper' template set, all other template content would still be taken from the 'upper' template set... the same goes for themes.
