I know there is a plugin for it, but I couldnt get it to work. The rar file wouldnt work on my computer.

You get a donation button straight from paypal and add the html to your template in admincp. You do not need a plugin for a paypal donation button on your site.
Ok, I've created my button on paypal, can someone walk me through the steps in adding it to the template?

Do you want it in footer, header, forumdisplay or what?
Go into admincp then into the themes/templates area. Open up the template you want this to be and add the code from paypal. It's easier than you think. The important thing is if you have multiple template to add the code into each one.
Most people use the "header" template to add paypal donation button.
