What is the correct $var for the current language?

$lang->language will display the current language being used.

Okey this gives the language name but not the language code like:

en, nl, de

Well, you didn't say you wanted it like that, you just asked for the current variable for the current language.

You can use the htmllang I guess:

$lang->settings['htmllang'];
