Is it possible to put a member or a group on moderation, i.e. so that their posts have to be approved but everyone else is unaffected. At the moment I can only see how to put a forum on moderation, not a member/group.

It's not there. You would need to use a plugin to accomplish this. Somehow MyBB has a ton of forum based permissions that instead should be based on groups. Like access to mycode or ability to post HTML.
Let's hope these issues are addressed in a near future release.

Yes, that makes sense labrocca. Even some very basic and limited forum software I have used in the past allows you to moderate certain members or groups. The mybb ability to moderate by forum doesn't seem very useful.
