The custom avatars for my vb3 users did not import into mybb. Is this supposed to work out of the box or do I need to write a script to move the data into files and set the path for the user?

I'm pretty sure avatar conversion was scrapped a while ago as it was buggy, and it wouldn't be much hassle for regular members to just upload them again. So, if you'd want to convert them, it'd need another script, yes.
