Reupload a new copy of ./index.php from a clean MyBB download.

Did you upload a fresh copy of index.php from the MyBB download? Also try uploading a fresh copy of ./inc/functions.php.

Also try deleting the current index.php when you reupload the fresh copy, there wouldn't be an error in a clean copy.
