You probably have some rewrite entries in your htaccess file that are redirecting /mybb/showthread to the showthread in the root.

Could you check in your root or in the mybb folder for any .htaccess file and post it here?

You're right, it was rewrite, which I had implemented a few years ago so I did not remember that I still had it. I was playing around with /mybb/showthread.php , and even placed die() at the top of the file, but it didn't die, so clearly the file was not the problem.
