I was curious what to tell my members about this. I'll make a bug report if you think this is one. However I bet it's setup purposely to be max 999 on resize. So what's the deal?

Probably so that someone can't just resize a image to 10392x28402

It's limited to that so you can't make it hugely insanely big. It's not a bug. You would definately stretch or contort some html element if you had something wider then 1000, and no one wants to scroll through an image that is really long [with certain exceptions]. If you want the fullsize, they should post a link to it, or just naturally click-through.
