How can I ad a custom header and a footer. What files do I need to modify.

Go to the ACP, click the Templates and Style tab, click Default, then Templates (in the left sidebar). There you can edit all the files.

For header look in Header Templates -> header and for footer look in Footer Templates -> footer.
