I think he wants to get rid of the smilies popup box.
But where do you want them then?
If it's not a popup I'm not sure if it'll insert them into the posts in the same way.

I had to use another javascript and a few template edits for my smilies (500+) to appear below the posteditor. Looks way better. I hate popups.
I want it as a popup but instead of the smilies preview I want it just as a link that when the user click it will open the popup to choose the smilies.
