You need to post a link to a site that has Google or Yahoo! bots are crawling on it so that the bots will visit your site and it will be in the search engine site.

Get links to your website and submit it to the search engines http://www.google.com.au/addurl/

From my experience it may take a week and when they start visiting, you will see their name in the "whos online" list.

It sorta depends when they visit. I started up a site a couple of days ago and it's already indexed in google.
