Im going to upgrade my server software. that includes sql3 > sql4 upgrade.

Anyway SQL4 ver. has some new features that might speed up some things... http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/News-4.0.x.html

is mybb MySQL4 compatible?

Yes it is. I use it on MySQL 4.0.20-standard.

Everything is backwards compatible with MySQL. There are some new features in MySQL 4 which MyBB however does not take advantage of.
