I'd recommend to you that you get the owner of the site to revert the changes he's made to the template and see if that fixes it. Personally, i'm not aware of such issues in a standard install.
As you said IE for Mac is dodgy and is now discontinued - MS recommend people switch to Safari or Mozilla Firefox.
