I've seen this done a lot around the Web: letting the root domain either be redirected to forum.site.com or the portal be the holding place for the domain itself. Which one is better to do if you just use your site as a forum?

Depends what your planning on doing for your website and what you will be doing.

I have content on the root domain and then have sub-domain(s) for the other stuff, like a forum or blog.

Root domain because I hate subdomains for some reason. Just looks better.

For SEO purposes I hardly ever use subdomains.

it all depends on what you are doing as if you want an main site with the content then that gose on the root if you want an forum and other stuff they should go on sub domains
