It's not pointless if it does what he wants. He wanted a plugin to add a favicon. Does that plugin add a favicon? Yes, so therefore, it isn't pointless.

It's pointless because all you need to do to add a favicon is upload one file to the root directory. There is no point in using a plugin to do that. Rolleyes

And then you have to edit a template, which most people won't want to do, hence the need for a plugin.

No, you don't need to edit any templates. So, no need for a plugin.
No, you do NOT need to edit a template for a favicon if you put the file in your root directory. See my sites, if you'd like... all three have favicons (if they don't show - clear cache and they should), NONE have template edits for them. The need for a template edit (or a plugin) would be if you do not have the ability to add it to the root directory of the domain or subdomain.
Also you should be able to use the same image for more than one smiley, which would mean you COULD have :smile: and : ) both convert to the same image...and the smilies section will line them up vertically with the text, as opposed to an an <img> tag which will not.
