I need some experienced person advice whether i buy this or not for hosting my website.

Specs :-

Core i5 750 QUAD CORE
» CPU: 2.66GHZ FSB 2.5GT/s
» RAM: 8GB
» DISKSPACE: 1TB SATA
» BANDWIDTH:4000GB/MONTH
» IP: 5
» Price: $159.95
» Direct Admin ( $10 / month )

My Doubts are :-
1. Is this capable to run myBB forum when 600+ users are reading board at a time. ( READING bcoz we are running forum as read only )

2. 6 Persons are Posting at a time

Your suggestion and advice are very much help full for me bcoz this Server will cost me $170 / month.

Thanx in advance
I would hope so the i series are beast machines.
Your bottleneck will most likely be the hard drive(s). Are you running RAID or a single SATA?

Huh Sorry i am quit new for this Dedicated thing .. what is good RAID or Single SATA ?
A single hard drive in a server is ALWAYS a bad idea. Avoid running a single hard drive at all costs. Running a RAID is good but only if it is a RAID1, RAID5, or RAID10.

RAID1 requires at least 2 hard drives and offers data protection (redundancy) but will cause a performance hit but since you are expected high IO on your server your drives will fail much faster so redundancy is a must so that you don't experience data loss. RAID5 requires at least 3 drives and offers better redundancy with little to no noticable performance hit. RAID10 requires at least 4 hard drives but offers you redundancy and much better performance so your IO times will be faster and your hard drives will be protected. Always try to get a hardware RAID controller for better performance.

Also, are you expecting to use up 1TB of disk space? You would be much better off getting 2 SAS or 2 SCSI drives for the kind of IO you plan to be experiencing.
Thank you very much KuJoe for giving me some light on his issue one more thing i want from your side can u please check this link https://hostkeeper.com/clients/cart.php?...roduct&i=2 and tell me what specifications are good for my Requirement.

Or can u tell me what server specifications are Required for Forums.Digitalpoint.com , it just give me an idea to understand thing before going for purchase.

He's right, but get one of these bad boys and you'll be set.

(or just use your 8GB RAM properly for caching, and you'll rarely hit the HDD)

Google showed that the correlation between disk usage and failure rates is perhaps not as strong as you expect...
Quote:One of our key findings has been the lack of a consistent pattern of higher failure rates for higher temperature drives or for those drives at higher utilization levels.

And what is this statistic based off? Concurrent connections? WOL activity?

This is very badly specified. If you have a forum of such a size, you should be aware of the amount of system load it uses.

True, but the fact that it is a rented server means he has no idea how many other servers this drive has been used for so even without taking usage into account, drive failure is very possible and based on his expected usage loss of data is not an option. Wink

The link is bringing me to shared hosting packages. Sad

For a site like DP your best bet is to go with cloud hosting or colocation unless you want to rent multiple servers. I suggest looking into http://www.stormondemand.com. Storm is a LiquidWeb company which is a top hosting provider and their data centers rock.

How long have 1TB drives been out for? And how long have they been at reasonable prices for?
Use that to gauge how old you really think the machine is...
1TB drives from all makers have been plagued with problems ever since being introduced to the consumer market. Running them not in a RAID on a production server is not a risk anybody should take.
