Do I misunderstand something;
Under Configuration > Settings > Show thread options
I select "Display posts using the classic layout"

...but it still shows the author info right above the post, just like the Horizontal option. No difference.

Is there any incompatible other setting I may have selected or is it a bug? Any other reason?

I have the latest MyBB version (just installed it a few days back).

The setting in the admincp only determines what a user will see by default.
(You are unaffected)
Go to the usercp and go to edit options.
Under thread view options, check "Display posts in classic mode."
Please try searching the forum before posting a thread.
