I've changed the icon for 'forum has new posts'. I changed the name to 'on.gif', and deleted the old one. I also changed the one I noticed that was called 'on copy.gif'.
However, it still shows the old one. What has happened? And how do I fix it?
F5 refresh as you may have cached version.
Will I have to do that every time I go to it?

Tried it. It hasn't worked.
If you have more as one theme you had to change it for every theme.
I've got several failed themes, and one which I 'force on users'. This is the one with the trouble.
URL?? If it's showing the old image it has to be coming from somewhere, either cache or it's still there... on copy.gif isn't a default image so I don't really know where that came from.
Maybe that's what happened.
Now, it changes each time I access the site... I'll try getting rid of On copy.gif and see if that works.
Check the image properties from your old icon and see if it is the same location as where you uploaded your new one.
In the past I also had problems with that, if you use more templates then also this problem could happen.
I'm suprised a user hasn't suggusted clearing your cache.
Sometimes caches don't delete old files properly. It can make your website look funky and or not update.
Try clearing your cache.
