Mandrake and Mandriva are actually quite good KDE distro's. A lot of people, even on Ubuntu Forums are saying its quite a loss, and they are hoping KDE forks parts of it.
I never used Mandrake or Mandriva but unbuntu is like the beginner distro, I personally loved Fedora when I was into Linux. I wish I had used more of them but I needed photoshop and I only had it for windows (fail) so I have to use windows (xp back then 7 now) and its not all that bad, I would suggest trying fedora, or openSuse, I have heard good things about that.
Fedora has plymouth (Yuck) Suse might be getting bought by microsoft.

Ubuntu is trash, especially the last few versions.

People like you disappoint me. Especially since hundreds of people contributed their free time into a distro and didn't get paid.
This is terrible news. I don't want to see only Ubuntu standing in the linux business world. :|
