I'm trying to change the profile url from /member.php?action=profile&uid=2287
to something shorter like /member.php?u=2287

Is they any way?

You have to enable search engine friendly URLs: http://community.mybb.com/user-2824.html

And how do i do that?

goto Admin Panel - Board Settings - Server and Optimization Options - Enable search engine friendly URLs? set to ENABLE..

please make sure you have .htaccess file
