I want to edit the forum images ( on.gif / off.gif / etc. )
but all i can find in all the templates is
either {$sub_forums} or {$forums}

Well you should create the image you want to replace it with and then save it to the images folder REPLACING the default images.
Then you have replaced them.
GIF quality sux...
so i saved in PNG
and anyways GIF isn't 100% transparent
WTF? How can something be less than 100% transparent? It'd be translucent.

Save it as a .png, then go to the folder and rename it to .gif.
It'll still have the same quality transparency.

I use .png for my forum icons.
You need to edit the forumbit_depth2_forum template, line 2. Possibly another template too, I can't remember for certain.
You also need to make edits to./jscripts/general.js
It's pretty simple.
