Is there any way i can get a recent news and a latest posts section in a website from mybb?

I had a look, and I'm not quite sure what to do.

Neowin.nets recent form posts block is what i'm aiming at.
I had a look in the database, and it doesn't look like each topic has a unique ID - so how would i pull the last topic (ignoring any replies)?
