OK I have found the files:

on.gif
off.gif
offlock.gif

I want to change them to .png files.

I have uploaded the files to the images folder and edited the forum legend at the bottom of the page, but I can't find where to edit the icons next to the forums?

forumbit_depth2_forum and forumbit_depth2_cat

You also need to edit ./jscripts/general.js if you want the "Click to mark forum as read" feature to work.
