Most shared hosts prohibit it. I know Dreamhost and Hostgator both do.
And most shared hosts dont support wildcard subdomains

Mine does, actually. I can run wordpress mu with subdomains on it.
Most hosts will give you a wildcard subdomain manually via support ticket if you give them a reason why they should. Just to screen people from setting up Blogger clones I guess.
