didn't know if any of you who run successful forums have any tips for us newcomers

i know the general idea to bring people to your site is - content content content

but is there anything else that might help along the way?
Be fair
not too many rules
be firm, don't let people flout the rules because they are your friends
be active

Smile
Make sure the content is something that you enjoy. If you don't like it, you are not likely to post new content and neither will your members.
Tip #1. Spend more time on your community than anywhere else.
Tip #2. Always listen to Labrocca. Its been determined he's always right. Big Grin

On a serious note, try to find others who share the same interests as you and make sure they stay active.
Also don't start with LOTS of forums, it will make your board look empty Smile

Tip #3. Never DENY what labrocca says, otherwise you might be banned
Tip #4. Be original, don't make an Anime or Warez forum (as example) the internet have enough of them.
Tip #5. Advertise it, Correctly, not spamming, mouth by mouth advertisement might be the best way, unless you have enough money to print flyers or stuff
Make sure you offer something that other communities of your type don't.
Read all the info you can find here: http://forumpromotion.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=22

Really good source of information. Also make sure to signup there, you can request some post packages or ads.
Best tip, don't be afraid to spend 30-40 dollars to kick start something.
