As for how long, the first public talk of SMF 2 was on April 8 2007: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/...c=163438.0

The first beta was released to 'charter members' (premium members?) on August 24, 2007: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/...c=190812.0

It is not stopping development there is active work towards the completion of SMF 2.0

Those issues with old SMF team members have been resolved.
