how do I remove this...(circled in red). I just want that spot to be blank.

just goto
ACP--> Templates & Style -- > templates -- > goto your theme
open header templates -- > header -->
look for <navigation> and remove it. Save everything. and it will be gone.

okay that worked, although it left a big white space, any ideas on how to bring the forum up closer to the header?
