Ever since the power went out when my friend was logging into his computer, after the Welcome to windows screen (and after he logs in) the screen is black, but he can still press CTRL ALT DELETE and open taskmgr and get into My Computer and browse the file system for example. I googled the issue and every site said that explorer.exe wasn't running, but my friend says it is... so what does everyone else think? Possibly a virus running fake explorer.exe... maybe? (maybe not )

Have you tried the restore disk? Sfc /scannow

I would try that, but I don't have the Windows Vista disk

You can request recovery disks from Microsoft I think

have you tried going into safe mode and using system restore to restore the computer back to before the problem happened?

Same thing happens in safe mode.
