I was very much saddened when i ran a seach for 'Free Forum Software' and saw that Invision Power (the makers of IPB) is listed above MyBB.
MyBB itself has the 6th position on that seach.
Is there anything that can be done to get us up there at the top?
Of course IPB is going to be above us, they're a paid software and it's very hard to compete with that unless it's Wordpress.
Well I wouldn't expect IPB to be above us when you are searching for Free forum software :p
It seems to be phpBB and Vanilla for me on google though
Ummm.. I use BOTH MYBB and IPB and i can assure you that is false. Both forums are of same niche ( just listed the true owner differently so i dont get in trouble for similar content rule..There is differences as one is a subscriber/data site vs just a forum ) and the IPB by far has the most posts/members/content etc and both are the same age yet my MYBB has always showed up higher in the search engines. usually it is on page 1 of google and there is a number of other forums that are larger as well then my MYBB forum who are not there. The only ones ahead of mine are by far the largest in my niche. Again the point is i use both and my MYBB constantly comes up higher in the search engines then the IPB one does. Oh and yeah both are current and up to date.
Oh and no i don't use any seo plugin either on either of my forums.
All i did was add some meta tags and such myself.. Same on both..

Yes you all did.
With this ( seo ) MYBB is eons ahead of the rest. That has been the case as well ever since i started using it back in Sept 2006. My MYBB forum had been using another software and right after i switched to MYBB my search ranking drastically improved and has held ever since.
So whatever you guys are doing keep doing it.
