I'm looking for some advice on how to get a community started on my forum. How did you guys take a new, blank forum and get people to go to it? What are some of the must do's? What worked best? What kept users at your forum? Is it worth spending money advertising on other forums?

From what I know, HF and DP spent $0 on advertising. You just need original content and an original idea.

Make lots of fake accounts and post with them. Post content that's nowhere else. Advertising on similar sites is probably the best thing.
Any other advice? Ive got a few ad possibilities lined up, any other tips help too!
Have a really good topic for your forum (it took me six months to come up with something original,) and post about 50-200 threads of original content.
I've added google SEO, i'm not sure if it's working or not but hopefully it is.
