I am a total moron for this kind of thing. Can someone explain to me how i do this stuff?
I have no clue how to do anything that that presumes you know.
Usually you can CHMOD a file in your FTP client (the program you use to transfer your files onto your web host). Usually you go into the 'file properties' and there you can select what permission to give the file. If you reply with the FTP client you use, we can help you further.

Great, now it won't let me change the Avatars directory. Whenever i try, it changes it to 766 or something.
Please contact your host about this issue and ask them to fix this problem.
