I know it's only really recommended to have Akismet installed if you are being hit by spam, not to prevent it. After having a few of my productive members banned, i came up with a possible work around.
I've done testing and that seems to work nicely on a test forum I set up. This may not work if you have many users and have been around for a while, you may need to manually move users. It should work on a new forum and keep it spam-free and not ban productive users.
- Make a new usergroup and copy the settings from the Registered user group. Name it whatever you want, I named mine Registered*.
- Set it so Registered users will automatically get promoted to the Registered* group when they reach a certain number of posts, I chose 10.
- Go into the Akismet settings and have it ignore posts from that usergroup.
