Is that a major problem with forums?

Up to you really. If you find a lot of people are stealing your bandwidth then it's probably a good idea.

In honesty it doesn't matter, unless you have a really high profile site, with lots of hosted images, you shouldn't need too.

The real questions are...

... are you stingy with your bandwidth? (for low traffic sites)

... is it causing bandwidth overload? (for high traffic sites)

I think i will wait until my forum get a little more popular.

Try this, then you will have to do all sorts to stuff to allow your forums through the hotlink protection as you will get broken images everywhere.
