if i upgrade to new version.. what changes i made in default theme at present will remain intact or i need to change everything again

If you just made some changes to the default MyBB theme then you will need to save the theme and re-upload it after you upgrade.

If there are just basic edits it should. However not all theme are compatible. So make sure you have a backup.

Your theme should be untouched during upgrade but you may need to modify/revert some of your templates to fix issues and get new 1.6 features working.
