The beta has not got a supported upgrade path Gold. The fact that there was a risk the beta would not be upgradable was made very clear when it was released. I am afraid you will have to either roll back to your 1.4 backup and upgrade that, or upgrade to 1.6 Gold manually. Upgrading from a beta to Gold is not being supported here.
