I have already seen a few people confused about the differences between Merging and Upgrading.
Upgrading
When you go from 1 version of MyBB to another.
Upload all the files from the ZIP to your server, overwriting the existing ones. Then, run <board url>/install/upgrade.php - this will upgrade your board to the latest version, without removing data.
Merging
When you go from a different forum software to MyBB.
Upload MyBB to the path you want, and then run <board url>/install/index.php. This will install a fresh copy of MyBB.
Download the Merge System, and upload the convert folder to the root of the board (so there is a folder called convert amidst admin, inc, uploads, etc.) Then you run <board url>/convert/ to merge the two boards.
Think of it as a highway.
Upgrading is repaving, you're going over what's there with a newer version.
Merging is when 2 roads connect to each other.
