How exactly does it looks bad? As far as default themes go I think it's a lot better than vB or SMF.
Then don't use the default theme.
You're not exactly supposed to keep the default theme, and we weren't going to overhaul the theme for a release like 1.4 > 1.6. 2.0 will have a new theme.
I actually like this theme. It's about a thousand times better than several other scripts. Very web2.0. It isn't spiced up, it's a very default theme, and it serves it's purpose well.

Have you noticed something with other forum software sites? They all have dull coloured forums. e.g vb
I like the default theme, and the 2.0 planned theme ^_^
