It makes the forum feel like a community, and less like a service.
Maybe your forum is different, and there's probably a use for the thanks button on warez forums and such. But it definitely should not be part of the core system, because it detracts from the community aspect of a forum.
I've been living on Mobile modding/hacking sites since i started using the internet. It was the most user friendly forum i've been and i don't think there will be another like it. The thanks mod was really a success. People do press the thank button along with posting an "appreciate post".
I agree 1001% with you that the thank mod shouldn't be made core. Else, the amazing mybb plugin system would be useless and it would bother those who don't want a thank mod.
