The URL is not used anywhere but it could be used for plugin purposes.

It should show the full page of the thread AND scroll to the post. I don't think the above format is used anywhere though?

But we would be wasting a precious URL type for something which we already have.
Precious? Pfft.
Nice idea but I prefer the link to be in:

http://awesomewebsite.wat/showpost.php?pid=awesomepostID
Not only do I just hate seeing a single post on a page, this could possibly screw up a lot of existing plugins.

a new file has to be created though Sad
I don't see why it's needed? What's the point of having a page which only displays one post, which 90% of the time will be completely out-of-context.
I would have to agree, I think if you are typing in a certain post, it shoud only show reply 579. But maybe that just me.

That's exactly the problem. If a plugin modifies showthread and this is implemented, it would most likely have to be updated to also modify the post.
A view single post mod could suffice, i remember on Lex-'s demo site he has something like that installed.
I still see no justification for showing only a single post from a thread. Far better to show that post in it's thread, giving the user somewhere to move onto. If a user happens upon a google link to single post, which is totally out of context, that's an extra HTTP request if they want to see anymore of the thread.

It's just bad practice.
