I wanted to build a cheap small computer, and have come up with a parts list.

MoBo

CPU

RAM (x2)

PSU

Data HD

System HD

Blu-ray drive

The total with all of the parts I'd like comes out to $639.92 but if I dump both hard drives (using one I have on hand) and one of the sticks of RAM for a bare minimum computer it comes out to $346.95.

What do you think? Could I do better for just as cheap?
You won't need 8gb of RAM. 2gb would be fine.
Biggest "mini" computer EVAR! Toungue

Unfortunately you are trying to get the best of both worlds (small vs power) but failing at both. Your "mini" PC will be the size of a normal PC but without the processing power. If you want to utilize the mini ITX then opt for smaller components and less components.
Yes I have to agree you won't be needing 8GB of RAM for a "mini computer".
Actually thats a pretty good base. If you were in canada atm, you could get most of those for about 100 less, so about 500ish
Strange, you add drives you don't need yet i don't see a GPU
It was meant to be built as a file server (It was going to have a second 2TB HD instead of the BR-drive) but considering even this is better than most of the computers I have access to it might become a main computer. The reason I left the GPU out is that it comes with one that I can use as a base until I start getting games that need better. That's the reason I picked this mITX mobo, so I could have the option to upgrade the GPU if I so choose.

CPU is the cheapest I could find, RAM is to take full advantage of the MoBo's capabilities. Hard drives... well who wouldn't want a 2TB hard drive? The 320GB system drive is so I can potentially triple-boot Win/Lin/OSX, though I'm not sure which version of Windows I want to run yet (and I don't actually care if OSX won't work, I just want Chameleon). I'd have gone SSD were they not so damn expensive.

I was going to put this in a shoe box, hence the mix-and-match sizes of the different parts, as well as the fact that I couldn't find a mini-ITX PSU with 3 SATA power cables. Mostly I was focusing on cheap more than specs but like I said, this is superior to most of the computers I have access to so I kind of upped some of the specs.
Dude you can find some with enough converters though, runs perfectly Wink
If your really looking for a fileserver with linux, try an old p5800-VM with a 2.XX pentuim 4 2gb of ram, and a decent speed HDD. Really thats overkill Toungue
Like I said, I might use this as my main computer. All of the ones I have now are underpowered and the one that will be replaced would be better suited as the file server. The "Mini" computer was a misnomer but I couldn't really think of anything better.
