default style (avatars above the posts)
Classic. I've always preferred it for some reason.
I like classic style. Becase such "zebra" with "avatars - then posts" is difficult to read.
But I noticed that in most themes for MyBB - classic style is overlooked
Classic for sure. I can read everything in one flow like a page of a book. Having the profiles on top, I feel like I am hitting a hurdle at every new post. I think the new "default" flavour is a misguided attempt at modernization.

horizontal on some, vertical on others
default mybb theme though (such as here), horizontal. no style whatsoever in the classic
Honestly depends on the theme.
With plugins like awards & points, default is much better.
I feel like Classic is much better when its styled, but when you need lots of room for information (awards, etc.) then Horizontal is smarter.
