I remember in previous MyBB 1.6 beta, if you would put your cursor over a template, it would show the sub-templates inside without the need to open it.
Now, it is really a pain to look for a specific template. e.g. quickreply form is under showthread.

Why was this reverted?
A lot of people complained about it, more people that those who said they liked it. Templates all start with a prefix describing where they are, as the quick reply form shows on the showthread page, it's in the Show Thread Templates, and is why it's called showthread_quickreply.

It's nothing much. If you can't be bothered to click once more to see the sub templates, it's your problem.
I hated it when it was opening up, it was like a spazz attack. The templates are categorized pretty logically, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding what you need.
I also didn't like it at first
